Meet Donna Montgomery! She is a loyal member and a regular in group exercise classes across our centers! 🏋🏿‍♀️ Donna was born and raised in New York, but she and her husband have called Charlotte home for the past six years. She is a Medical Lab Scientist, and worked in cytogenetics for many years helping to diagnose and treat genetic diseases and oncologic disorders. She now works in immunogenetics with a focus on tissue and organ transplantation, and often comes to the Y in her scrubs before changing into workout clothes for class! In addition to her rewarding career, Donna loves beauty and fashion, but says she’s a nerd at heart! Like many others, after the worst of COVID-19, she had a new appreciation for many things she had previously taken for granted. She was grateful to be healthy coming out of the pandemic, and vowed not to take her health for granted ever again. This rejuvenated her motivation to get back in the gym, and she was determined to make new lifestyle choices to improve her health. She rejoined the Y in December 2022, and immediately starting taking group exercise classes. She found the instructors to be very welcoming and encouraging, as they assisted her with modifying workouts in the beginning. Despite just getting started, the classes were fun for her and she looked forward to challenging herself every week. Almost two years later, she’s still having fun and challenging herself weekly! Since restarting her fitness journey, Donna has lost about 100 lbs. and has gained both strength and community. She credits the YMCA for playing a huge part in that! Group ex classes are still her favorite part of the Y; she loves the variety they provide and has met many wonderful instructors and members by taking classes. Some of her favorite classes include Group Fight, Group Power, High Fitness, Pilates, and Barre. One major goal Donna had was to be able to lift and squat 100 lbs. for the leg portion of Group Power, as that felt very symbolic for her. She added a little weight every couple of weeks, and eventually met her goal, as pictured! Way to go, Donna! We are so happy to be part of your story and hope the Y continues to strengthen your spirit, mind, and body!
